This English-language training course consists of two half-days and a homework assignment and offers an introduction to the use and meaning of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) in combination with the preparation of a descriptive diagnosis within the mental health care sector.

The DSM is an international classification system based on scientific research that supports professionals in using a shared language to describe mental disorders.

In the Netherlands, only BIG-registered professionals are allowed to make official diagnoses. Nevertheless, knowledge of the DSM and descriptive diagnosis is essential for anyone working in mental health care. It helps with:

  • recognising symptoms,
  • communicating with colleagues,
  • linking symptoms to possible causes,
  • supporting diagnostic processes.

PsyGlobal therefore offers an accessible and practical introductory training course that focuses on these core skills.

Participants in the training course must have access to the Desk reference to the diagnostic criteria from DSM-5-TR (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).
